The American 1 Ounce Silver Eagle
The American Silver Eagle is the biggest-selling silver bullion coin in the world. Minted at West Point, Philadelphia, and San Francisco by the U.S. Mint, it’s the official silver bullion coin of the United States. It’s a high-quality coin that’s known and traded everywhere.
On July 9th, 1985 President Ronald Reagan signed the Liberty Coin Act into law, authorizing the production of the American Silver Eagle. The legal face value of the 1oz Silver Eagle is $1, although the actual silver content makes the coin worth much more. The Obverse side of the coin shows Adolph A. Weinman’s “Walking Liberty”. The image depicts a walking Lady Liberty with the inscription “In God We Trust” on her right and the word “Liberty” above her.
The reverse of the coin portrays an eagle wearing a shield, holding arrows in the left talon while grasping an olive branch in the right. In its beak the eagle holds a ribbon saying E PLURIBUS UNUM. From 1986 through 2002 the silver used for minting the Silver Eagle came from America’s Defense National Stockpile, to raise money for balancing the federal budget. The Silver Eagle is one of the most popular silver coins in the world and is a great way to buy silver.
